Gorilla Trekking with In Situ Safaris

Gorilla trekking is the flagship activity at In Situ Safaris – an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime encounter with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Uganda hosts over half the world's remaining ~1,100 mountain gorillas, and we specialize in intimate, responsible treks that support conservation.

Key Locations

  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site): Home to ~25 habituated gorilla families across four sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo). Dense rainforest with diverse terrain – most popular for reliable sightings.
  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Part of the Virunga volcanoes; usually one habituated family (Nyakagezi). Offers dramatic volcanic scenery and potentially easier hikes.

What to Expect on a Trek

  • Briefing & Start — Morning briefing at park headquarters (7-8 AM).
  • Hike — Groups of 8 trekkers max, led by expert rangers and trackers. Duration: 2-8 hours (depending on gorilla location and terrain – steep, muddy paths possible).
  • The Encounter — 1 magical hour observing the family (up to 10m distance). Watch silverbacks, mothers with infants, playful juveniles.
  • Fitness Level — Moderate to challenging; porters available (~$15-20/day) to carry bags and assist.
  • Rules — No flash photography, keep 10m distance, no trekking if sick (to protect gorillas).

Pricing & Permits (2025/2026)

  • Gorilla Permit — $800 USD (foreign non-residents); $700 (foreign residents); lower for East Africans.
  • Permits are not included in tour quotes but secured for you (book early – high demand!).
  • Gorilla Habituation Experience (Bwindi only, 4 hours with semi-habituated group): $1,500 USD.

Best Time to Trek

  • Dry Seasons (Peak) → June-September & December-February: Easier trails, better visibility.
  • Wet Seasons (Low) → March-May & October-November: Lush greenery, fewer crowds, potential discounts on lodging.
