Join us as we dive into Uganda’s primate capital – Kibale National Park. Discover the thrill of habituation experiences, forest walks, and close encounters with our closest relatives in their natural habitat.
Kibale National Park, often called the "Primate Capital of the World," is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species. Located in southwestern Uganda, this lush rainforest offers some of the best chimpanzee tracking experiences in Africa, with a 90-95% success rate in sightings. In 2026, visitors can choose between standard chimpanzee tracking (1 hour with habituated chimps) or the immersive Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (full day with researchers).
These encounters allow you to observe chimpanzees pant-hooting, grooming, foraging, and playing – behaviors that mirror our own as our closest relatives, sharing 98.7% of our DNA.
Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). For 2026:
Limited permits are available daily (groups of 6-8 for tracking), so book 3-6 months in advance, especially for peak season, through a tour operator or directly with UWA.
Dry seasons are ideal: June to September and December to February. Trails are drier, easier to navigate, and chimpanzees are more active.
Wet seasons (March-May, October-November) offer fewer crowds, discounted lodges, and lush greenery – but prepare for mud and rain.
Tracking is available year-round.
Treks begin early with a briefing at Kanyanchu Visitor Center. Groups are assigned a habituated community, led by experienced rangers.
Hiking lasts 2-6 hours depending on chimp location – terrain is undulating with dense vegetation. Once found, enjoy 1 hour observing from 8 meters (no flash photography).
For habituation: Start at dawn, spend the full day with semi-habituated chimps alongside researchers – an in-depth, educational experience.
Rules: Minimum age 12-15, maintain distance, wear masks if unwell (chimps vulnerable to human diseases).
Moderate fitness is required for uneven trails, humidity, and possible steep sections. No extreme climbing, but be prepared for 2-6 hours of walking.
Hire porters ($15-20/day) to carry bags and assist – supports local communities.
Train with regular hikes; stay hydrated and pace yourself.
Pack light in a waterproof daypack:
Combine with Bigodi Wetland walk, crater lakes, or gorilla trekking in nearby parks. Your visit supports conservation and local communities.
Book early and prepare for a profound, exhilarating encounter with chimpanzees!
